![]() Rookie Andrews in as starting RG April 30, 2004 By Bob Kent http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/homeNewsDetail.jsp?id=11079 Terrell Owens, Jevon Kearse and Dhani Jones made their first practice appearances in Eagles uniforms on Friday, and as mini-camp opened there was real news to shout about. Andy Reid wasted little time inserting No. 1 pick Shawn Andrews into the lineup. In fact, Andrews worked at right guard with the first-team offense in Friday morning's practice and, according to the head coach, will do so throughout this three-day, five-practice mini-camp. OL Shawn Andrews "I want to give him as many reps as I possibly can and that's the fastest way to get them," said Reid, addressing the media following practice. "Jermane (Mayberry) is at left guard and Andrews is at right guard, and that's the way it will be this camp." Rotating in is third-year man Artis Hicks. The shift along the line was prompted by the departure of John Welbourn, who was traded to Kansas City last weekend. Mayberry, the starter at right guard the last four years, has played 10 career games at left guard, the last time was in 1998. "It's still guard," said Mayberry, adding that he was notified earlier in the week about his positional move. But the story is Andrews, the 6-foot-4, 340-pounder from Arkansas who impressed Reid during his first NFL workout. "So much of it is him learning, but you can see the talent that he has," Reid said of his top pick. "It's just a matter of him working himself into comfort before he gets into the live stuff in training camp. He looked like he did okay, but cautioned that it was just one installation. "It's important they learn the system as fast as they possibly can, understand the tempo of practice and what's expected of them during the drills." Mayberry said Andrews' biggest adjustment will be learning the terminology and shifting from tackle to guard. "He's a big, athletic guy. He's got great feet and looks good," Mayberry said of Andrews. "It's always good to have good linemen." All but three Eagles practiced on Friday. Those missing time were cornerback Sheldon Brown (hernia), fullback Jon Ritchie (recovering from his shoulder surgery in the off-season) and halfback Brian Westbrook (recovery from his triceps injury). Also, the team announced that running back Correll Buckhalter and linebacker Keith Adams have signed their one-year contract tenders. Both are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents after the season. |
